In the wake of the tragic loss of Weymouth PD Sgt. Michael Chesna, NYPD Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill has sent the Chesna family a heartfelt letter, highlighting the fallen hero’s great service to the uniform, community and nation.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation has pledged $100,000 towards paying off the Chesna family mortgage, and is fundraising to ensure the family is given a small moment of relief during these dark times. To donate, click here.
To the family, friends, and colleagues of Police Officer Michael Chesna:
The devastating and sudden loss of Officer Chesna has left a hollow that is deeply felt by the entire law
enforcement profession, far beyond Weymouth. On behalf of the entire New York City Police Department,
please accept our sincere condolences.
I know that no words can ease the grief that you now bear, but know this: Everyone who proudly wears a
police uniform will forever do their best to honor Michael’s dedication to public service. When an officer
swears an oath to serve the people of his nation and his community, as Michael did, the greater police
community swears an oath to that officer, too. We promise to foster him, to honor his commitment, and to
never forget his sacrifice. And, always, that promise extends to the officer’s family and loved ones, as well.
I want to thank the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation for again leading the way on this front. At
the NYPD, we will never be able to adequately thank the volunteers and donors of this great organization
for the support they have consistently shown us and our members’ families, particularly following the
murders of Detective Miosotis Familia last year, and Detectives Rafael Ramos and WenJian Liu in 2014.
May you find solace through the memories of Michael’s remarkable life, and comfort among all who knew
and loved him.
James P. O’Neill
